GOBARdhan Scheme can help reduce gas imports by $5 billion, says IBA

The GOBARdhan Scheme aims to convert organic waste into clean energy, reducing gas imports by $5 billion.
The scheme has a ₹23,731-crore financial outlay and is expected to generate economic, environmental, and social dividends.
India imports 50% of its natural gas, exposing the economy to volatile prices and geopolitical risks, with a $15.2 billion import bill in FY 2024-25.
The scheme can reduce fertiliser imports and subsidy burden, translating into significant fiscal savings and contributing to the reduction in the Current Account deficit.
